Official Response to Candidates Filing as “Democrats” and “Independent Democrats” for the 2016 General Election

Since there is no actual state registration of parties in Washington, candidates can enter anything as their party preference when filing.

The Clark County Democrats support Democratic candidates who share our core values including women's reproductive rights, social & racial justice, gender pay equity, civil rights, true immigration reform, campaign finance reform, environmental protection and the rejection of voter suppression initiatives. We hold that our core values don't just pop onto a candidate’s resume the minute that s/he sees an opportunity to get elected as some flavor of Democrat, whether it be as an “Independent Democrat” OR just a “Democrat”.

In the 17th Legislative District (central Clark County), State Senate candidate Tim Probst has filed as an “Independent Democrat”. Tim has a life long record of supporting Democratic core values in and out of office. Probst is Washington State's best opportunity to restore sanity and balance in the state senate. This makes Tim Probst the best choice not only for Democrats but for all residents of the 17th Legislative District.

However, all candidates who call themselves “Independent”, or any type of “Democrat”, are subject to the same evaluation process by our party members that voters should use when judging candidates. One of the biggest complaints about the two party system is a tendency not to evaluate candidates on their merits but merely by the letter next to their name. The local Democratic party shares this concern which is why we have a candidate evaluation and endorsement process.  We strongly urge voters to check our website regularly and attend democratic events to learn about our supported and endorsed candidates.

Let us be clear, 2016 is the year the local party says loudly, proudly and without a doubt, “We Are Democrats” and we won't apologize for our core values on the off chance of getting a few extra votes. We believe the citizens of Clark County deserve better than having elections run on misplaced campaign strategies, rather than on clear honest information about the candidates.

Not only is it time to get the money out of politics, it's time to put integrity back into politics. We do that by running for office as who we are, not who we think the voters want us to be, or to merely make some ideological statement.

We look forward to an exciting election in 2016 based on the issues and urge all Clark County citizens to vote in the August 2, 2016 primary.
