An apology to Donald for making him lie?!

Peter Aller

Here's a little column by Rex Huppke of the Chicago Tribune published August 23, 2017, and reproduced in The Columbian Sun Aug 27, 2017.  It neatly summarizes many of the most recent lies by Trump and skewers him, as well, referring to him as an "infantile madman" - a succinct, usable reference for sure.

Energetic Dinner! County Fair Next!

The annual Clark County Democrats Gala Dinner and Auction went off without a hitch and with the energetic effort of 250+ attendees.  It was planned to have a smaller, more fun approach to the dinner with lots of different aspects and that was the way it went down.  The venue was charming - a little warm, but not excessive, the speeches were energetic and genuine by Liz Luce, Sen Maria Cantwell, Rich Rogers, Sen Annette Cleveland, and State Chair Tina Podlodowski.

The food was provided by Company Tonight, a Portland catering firm that set up grills outside and provided delicious salmon steaks and flank steaks.  Auction participation was very good.

Now it's time for the annual Clark County Fair.  We Democrats have a booth this year, as usual, to make contact with frustrated citizens.  We have a few 3 hour shifts left to fill and expect there's several of you that would jump at the chance to participate.  Click this LINK to go to a web page showing the open times, and a form below to submit your request to be a Democrat at the Fair.

Remember, Obamacare is a Republican design

Peter Aller

Read the Healthcare column by Eugene Robinson, Washington Post columnist, July 23.  In it Eugene points out many salient points about the current Senate kerfufle including' "Obamacare, you will recall, was once Romneycare; it was fashioned after a system Mitt Romney successfully implemented when he was governor of Massachusetts. It is based on ideas originally developed at the conservative Heritage Foundation, ideas the Republican Party once liked — until President Obama embraced them."  Good stuff - LINK

Sen Maria Cantwell town halls

Sen Cantwell is doing something not usually done - she's having some Town Halls.  This is unusual because there is so much ground to cover statewide, as compared to other offices, like congressperson (Wait. What?  She doesn't hold Town Halls?)

Sens. Murray, Cantwell Join 196 Members of Congress Asking the Court to Compel President Trump to Obey the Constitution

Largest group of Congressional plaintiffs in history seek court order
to hold President Trump accountable for violating the Constitution’s
anti-corruption Foreign Emoluments Clause

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA), along with 196 fellow Members of Congress, filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia against the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump. President Trump’s ongoing failure to obtain the consent of Congress before accepting payments, benefits, or gifts from foreign states violates one of the Constitution’s critical anti-corruption provisions: the Foreign Emoluments Clause.

The Foreign Emoluments Clause requires that all elected officials, including the president, seek the “consent of the Congress” before receiving any gifts, payments, or benefits from foreign governments. The Constitution’s Framers included such a requirement to protect against foreign influence on U.S. officials, and to ensure that those officials act in the national interest, instead of their own.

“The Constitution requires the President to obtain Congress’ permission to accept private payments and gifts, and President Trump has refused to do so,” said Senator Murray. “President Trump’s unprecedented business dealings and conflicts of interest make it difficult for him to assure the public that he is acting in the best interest of the country and not merely working for himself or other millionaires, billionaires, and special interests. It is time for our courts to restore this necessary transparency to the White House.”

“No one is above the law, not even the President. The foreign payments President Trump’s businesses receive are precisely the sort of transactions forbidden in our Constitution to protect us against corruption,” said Senator Cantwell.

Because President Trump has refused to disclose his business dealings abroad, the full scope of his potential Constitutional violations is unknown. Independent reporting has shown that President Trump has received the following foreign emoluments during his presidency among others:
•                     Payments from foreign governments housing their officials in rooms or hosting events at Trump’s Washington, D.C. hotel after Inauguration Day.
•                     Entities owned by foreign states paying rent at Trump World Tower in New York City.
•                     The Chinese government granting thirty-eight trademarks to the Trump Organization.

While President Trump continues to accept benefits from foreign governments, Congress has no choice but to seek a remedy through the courts.

“If courts rule otherwise,” added Elizabeth Wydra, President of Constitutional Accountability Center, the public interest organization whose attorneys are representing Members of Congress in this case, “President Trump would be permitted to make government decisions subject to a glaring conflict of interest. The prospect that a president’s decisions would be influenced by foreign manipulation or his personal wealth is exactly why the nation’s Founders adopted the Foreign Emoluments Clause.”

The Constitution does not require Congress to seek information about any benefits the President may be receiving from other countries – rather, the President must come to Congress to disclose any foreign gifts or payments and to obtain permission before accepting them. Nonetheless, Members of the Senate and the House have made repeated attempts to obtain information about President Trump’s business holdings and potential conflicts of interest. These and similar inquiries to Republican Congressional leadership have gone unanswered.

The full list of plaintiffs who have joined this case is available here. A Congressional Research Service analysis of suits by members of Congress found no larger action.

Sen Cantwell - Keep Resisting repeal of Obamacare

Peter Aller

Our resistance is working.

Today, Mitch McConnell said he would be postponing a vote on the Senate's Trumpcare bill.

But we know this fight is not over. We must keep up the resistance until this bill is in the trash can where it belongs.

Sign on today to help stop the Republicans' heartless health care bill!

If we work together, we can beat this bill once and for all.

Subject: Stop this plan NOW

22 million lives are at stake. We need to speak out now.

The CBO score for Senate Republicans' health bill is out, and if their bill passes, 22 million Americans will be left with nothing.

Included will be 15 million Medicaid patients -- our children, veterans, the disabled, and the elderly. And Republicans are taking away their coverage while handing out tax cuts to the wealthiest people in the country.

I'll say it again: Republicans are about to strip coverage from 22 million Americans. That's the combined population of Kansas, New Mexico, Nebraska, West Virginia, Idaho, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Montana, Delaware, South Dakota, Alaska, North Dakota, Washington, D.C., Vermont, and Wyoming.

It's absolutely shameful. We can't let Republicans steal health care from 22 million Americans. We can't let them hurl our nation into a health crisis.

Join me in opposing Republicans' heartless health care bill now! It's time to stand up and be counted, and let Republicans hear all of us -- loud and clear.

Millions of Americans rely on programs like Medicaid just to stay alive. But time and time again, Republicans have turned their backs on families struggling to maintain their health coverage.

The GOP's despicable bill will deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions. It will deprive the most vulnerable of the care they need. Senate Republicans even added a provision to their bill to lock people who don't maintain "continuous coverage" out of the market. It's essentially a death sentence.

We cannot delay, we cannot relent. 22 million lives are at stake. Stand with me and denounce the Republican health care bill today!

Thank you,

Maria Cantwell
U.S. Senator

Sens Cantwell and Sanders call for resignation of Energy

Peter Aller

Senators Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) and Ranking Member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) called on Secretary of Energy Rick Perry to fire William Bradford, who was recently appointed to lead the Department of Energy’s Office of Indian Energy. After his appointment, the Washington Post exposed his record of making bigoted and misogynistic statements, including calling the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II “necessary.”
The letter was also signed by Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Bernard Sanders (I-Vt.), and Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.).

Cantwell Statement on Senate Trumpcare Bill CBO Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released its report of Senate Republicans’ Trumpcare legislation. U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) made the following statement in response to the report.

“The non-partisan CBO confirms the Senate Trumpcare bill doubles down on mean. The bill will tear health insurance away from 15 million Medicaid patients while handing out tax cuts to the wealthiest. The Republican Trumpcare bill will also have devastating effects by raising costs and leaving more than 22 million Americans without health coverage overall.

“The vast majority of our rural hospital patients use Medicaid.  Many of these hospitals and clinics are now concerned they won’t be able to survive.

“I will continue to fight Trumpcare at every opportunity.”

Since Trumpcare was unveiled in the House, Cantwell has sounded the alarm on how the bill’s cuts to Medicaid would hurt people in the Northwest and throughout the country. She has partnered with patients and patient advocates, hospitals, veterans groups, and other advocacy organizations at events throughout Washington state and in the halls of Congress to make clear what is at stake for the American people if Trumpcare is allowed to pass.

Sen Cantwell outraged at Senate Trumpcare

House Republicans passed a mean, reckless bill that would leave the most vulnerable Americans' health care coverage in the dust. And now, Senate Republicans are following suit with an even meaner and more reckless bill.

Building the Affordable Care Act was an enormous undertaking. It took collaboration between Democrats and Republicans. The mark-up period was one of the longest in congressional history. But Republicans are tearing all of that down to push a new health care law without a public hearing, without a single Democratic amendment, and no public debate.

That's right. 13 GOP Senators rushed to craft a new health care policy that will affect every life in the United States -- and they didn't collaborate with anyone. Not one Democrat, and not one woman.

Join me in rejecting Republicans' Trumpcare bill that would be devastating to poor Americans, increase costs on working families, and deny medical coverage to those with pre-existing conditions.

We know why Senate Republicans were so secretive about their bill -- it will hurt everyday Americans. And in no way will it be an improvement on the Affordable Care Act!

More than 1.7 million veterans rely on Medicaid for their treatment and care. Many are not able to access Department of Veterans Affairs clinics, or are not eligible for VA health coverage -- so Medicaid is their only choice.

I refuse to let Senate Republicans break our promise to our veterans by cutting Medicaid. And I will not sit idly by while the Republicans' Trumpcare bill destroys our health care system.

Stand with me against Senate Republicans' Trumpcare bill today.

Thank you,

Maria Cantwell
U.S. Senator
