Press Release

This Month With Meaningful Movies at

Cascade Park Community Library

Our documentary, “Shadows of Liberty, reviews the history of media in our country and how new technologies have changed the landscape of information delivery over the years. It reveals the forces which have been brought to bear to change the fundamental purpose in some parts of that landscape from informing the public to entertainment and promotion of special interest agendas. We believe that both conservative and liberal members of our audience will leave with a the perspective that major outlets of news in our country are neither liberal nor conservative, but something else, which is never discussed within those outlets.

When we have our Community Conversation the following week, we will be able to hear from a panel of media personnel about how they were attracted to their work and the challenges they face in today's media climate. There will also be an opportunity for sharing reactions to the documentary and asking questions of the panel.

However, gaining a better understanding is only the beginning. One of the major conclusions of the documentary is that independent local media is critically important to maintaining a functioning democracy. We hope our audience will leave with a renewed commitment to utilize and support our local media infrastructure and a few ideas of how to evaluate and distinguish between reliable news sources designed to inform and information with another purpose.

Panelists for the event are: John Hill, Metro Desk Editor at The Columbian,

Jim Demmon, the manager of the Clark/Vancouver Television (CVTV), and Susan Galaviz who championed the establishment of KXRW FM radio here in Vancouver. We are hoping for a fourth panelist but must await word about his scheduling.

When: November 9th at 6:00PM (doors open at 5:30PM) for the screening;

and November 16th at the same hours for the Community Conversation.

Where: Cascade Park Community Library, 600 NE 136th Ave, Vancouver, WA 98684

Accomodations: There is no admission charge; pizza and water are provided; free will donations are accepted to help cover food cost.

Leonard Pitts Duscusses Tuesday's win

Peter Aller

Miami Herald columnist, Leonard Pitt on Friday examined the way we won on Tuesday and suggests how to keep that momentum going.  He says Trumpism is not dead, but is wounded.  He points out the victories and some of their ironies - that a transgender woman defeated the man who authored the transgender bathroom restrictions in Virginia.

The push to victory seemingly came from people who failed to vote in the 2016 election but are anti-Trumpism advocates now.  These are the people we must continue to nurture for 2018 and through 2020.

The Trump worshipers are intransigent to a fault - reason escapes them - and are not to be bothered with; just voted over top of.

Trump tax plan disingenuous

Peter Aller

Here's another statement about the flawed Trump tax plan.  Lawrence H. Summers is a Harvard Professor who used to work for Pres Obama.  This op/ed appeared in The Columbian 10/16/17.

Summers is direct in his appraisal.  The tax plan will hurt the country and not help the middle class.

Kathy Gillespie has announced her 2018 candidacy for 18th Legislative District Representative for Position 2.  Kathy is a democrat running for the seat apparently being vacated by Liz Pike. Kathy ran for the seat in 2016 and received an encouraging 43% of the vote.  This year's race is off to an early start with a focus on fundraising.

Clark County Democrats Statement: Vancouver Protest

Statement on the Events at the Protest September 10th in Vancouver, Washington

Vancouver (WA) – September 16, 2016

Last weekend, Vancouver, Washington joined the growing list of U.S. cities experiencing some level of violence or threat of violence when protesters and counter-protesters clashed on issues revolving around race, nationalism and religion.

The Clark County Democrats would like to recognize and thank the Vancouver Police Department, Clark County Sheriff’s Department and local officials for their professional, calm and effective handling of what could have become an explosive, perhaps deadly situation.

We also want to state loud and clear that any violence or threat of violence is unacceptable when Americans are exercising their right to peaceably assemble for any reason as protected by the United States Constitution.

Without hesitation, we condemn violence in protests from any group identifying itself as “left” or “right” wing.  We want to be clear that groups like “Antifa” have no association with the local democratic party nor do we support or condone their actions. There is never a reason to justify violence against fellow Americans or vandalism to personal property and small businesses.

That, being said, we are alarmed by the continuing rise in white nationalism and racial tensions which is being contributed to by the president. As recent as yesterday, President Trump was defending his remarks equating the peaceful protesters in Charlottesville with violent Nazi sympathizers. The president’s attitude and words have a great danger of spurring hate groups into further agitation and potential violence. We would ask the president to recall his own tweet from September 2014 quoting Ronald Reagan that “Peace is not the absence of conflict, it’s the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means”.
